Operations department is one of the Zambia Railways Limited (ZRL) departments charged with the responsibility of turning the wheels of the national railway company in Zambia. The department is manned by a specialized and highly experienced manpower such as Shunters, Train Assistants and Train Drivers to mention but a few. The department is headed by Director of Operations. Our specialized personnel are charged with the responsibilities of operating both freight and passenger trains between Vic-Falls Bridge border and Sakania borders on the mainline and branch line in Chililabombwe with a stretch of 933 kilometer, while passenger trains from Livingstone to Nkana-Kitwe on a stretch of 839 kilometer including Mulobezi with a distance of 162 kilometer.
The Centralized Train Control (CTC) is based at Kabwe and all train movements are planned and controlled from here. Our boarder points are at Kapiri Mposhi with TAZARA (Tanzania Zambia Railway Company), Sakania with SNCC (Societe Nationale Des Chemins De Fer Congolais) and Victoria Falls with NRZ (National Railway of Zimbabwe).
Other positions in the Department are not specialized but strategic line managers. The strategic line managers are involved in the day to day production planning meetings for the purpose of providing a seamless railway transportation of both freight and passengers trains. All these processes are done in an economical, efficient and safe manner in liaison with regions through Regional Operations Controllers (ROCs) in line with the business objectives of Zambia Railways Limited (ZRL). The department operates trains on a scheduled service design on a high level operating process with a bias to train execution and monitoring.
