CARGO TRAIN DERAILMENT IN MAZABUKA
KABWE, Zambia, February 6th 2026 – Zambia Railways Limited (ZRL) wishes to inform the public and all stakeholders of a goods train derailment that occurred on 5th February 2026 at approximately 23:10 hours between Magoye and Mazabuka section in Southern Province.
The derailment involving train no. 522, was conveying coal from Livingstone to Ndola. The incident involved seven (07) coal wagons, and of these, four (04) wagons capsized.
Preliminary investigations have revealed that the derailment was caused by acts of vandalism.
There were no fatalities recorded and all the train crew members are safe and injury free. However, there has been significant damage to the railway infrastructure as well as four wagons that have been extensively damaged.
Recovery operations are underway, and heavy-lifting equipment, including a railway breakdown crane, have been mobilized to facilitate rerailing, and accelerate restoration of operations and clearance of the affected wagons. The Management and technical team are on site working round the clock to expedite restoration works and ensure that disruption to train services is kept to the minimum.
ZRL regrets any inconvenience caused by the train derailment and remains committed to ensuring the safety and integrity of rail operations.
