ZRL, CEAR SIGN MoU TO OPERATIONALISE CHIPATA – MCHINJI RAILWAY LINE
Today, Zambia Railways Limited has taken a strategic step by signing a Memorandum of Understanding with Central East African Railways (CEAR)/Nacala Logistics – a move set to reignite regional connectivity and unlock massive trade potential across borders.
This isn’t just another agreement. It’s a revival of opportunity.
The Chipata-Mchinji Railway Line, once a vital artery for cross-border trade, is now firmly on the path to reactivation. With its strategic link to the Nacala Corridor through Malawi to the Port of Nacala in Mozambique, this partnership opens a direct gateway to international markets through one of Africa’s most efficient deep-water ports.
The signing ceremony was held at the Landlinked Zambia Conference at Ciela Resort in Lusaka.
The ceremony was witnessed by the Ministry of Transport and Logistics,the Southern African Railways Association(SARA) among other stakeholders.
What does this mean?
* Initial movement of 100,000+ metric tons per month.
* Reliable, more cost-effective logistics.
* Boosted trade in fuel, fertilizer, copper, coal, wheat, and other commodities.
* Stronger regional integration and economic growth.
This MoU signals more than collaboration-it’s a shared commitment to transforming rail into the backbone of regional trade.
Zambia is not just connecting rails…
We are connecting economies.
