IDC CEO COMMENDS ZRL FOR INNOVATION
Industrial Development Corporation(IDC) Chief Executive Officer Mr. Perry Mapani has commended Zambia Railways Limited (ZRL) for being innovative amidst challenges in keeping the company afloat .
During his familiarization tour of ZRL ,Mr. Mapani noted that ZRL has a skilled workforce that is sustaining the operations of the company through ingenuity.
“It is gratifying to note that there is clearly innovation in ZRL which has contributed immensely in holding the company together despite the infrastructure and rolling stock challenges being experienced” noted Mr. Mapani.
Mr. Mapani urged management to continue with out of the box ideas that will steer the company to greater and desirable operational levels.
Meanwhile Zambia Railways Limited Acting Managing Director Engineer Fred Mwila disclosed that ZRL is implementing private train operations with customers aimed at enhancing capacity and improving service delivery.
“ Private train operations allow for customers to ply on the ZRL network using their own rolling stock . Customers such as Impala Zambia , Calabash Freight, C. Steinweg Bridge and African Container Depot are running trains between Kapiri Mposhi, Ndola and Sakania sections,” said Eng Mwila
Eng. Mwila said the company has further entered into partnerships with neighbouring railway administrations in an effort to enhance capacity.
“ We have partnered with Beitbridge Bulawayo Railway (BBR) for provision of locomotives with the aim of increasing rolling stock capacity for smooth rail operations as well as improved efficiency.” Said Eng. Mwila.
Eng. Mwila said that the company has further witnessed a growth in revenue streams outside train operations through provision of engineering services to external consumers as well as the estates and buildings unit.
The tour covered among other facilities ,the Centralised Train Control Office and the Main Workshop.
