Zambia Railways Limited (ZRL) has installed safety signage at strategic level crossing points across the railway network, a critical step in enhancing public safety and reducing accidents.

The initiative, made possible through the Government Railway Improvement Project (GRIP) funds, underscores ZRL’s commitment to safeguarding lives and property along its railway network.

The installed signage will increase awareness and visibility at level crossings by providing clear, standardized safety instructions for motorists, pedestrians, and cyclists.

Thirty-five (35) level crossing points on the main line from Livingstone to Chingola were identified to be prone to accidents based on internal safety audits and historical accident data. The signage installed includes; Whistle Boards, Puffing Billy signs, St Andrews cross signs and Stop signs.

The signage will also enhance visibility and mitigate level crossing accidents as the company awaits to install automated boom barriers.

The main level crossing points that have been installed with signage in the Northern and Intermine region include: Bwana Mkubwa, Chiwala, and Airport Road, Robert Moffat, Ndate Ndola, Misundu, Tata, Central Street, Mukuba, Coca Cola, Mbukulu, Chambeshi Metals, Sabina, Kitwe Main and Lukanda level crossing point.
