GOVERNMENT INSPECTS SINKHOLE ON THE NDOLA – SAKANIA RAILWAY LINE
On Saturday 15th February,2025 , the Minister of Transport and Logistics Hon. Frank Museba Tayali in the company of Zambia Railways Limited(ZRL) Managing Director Eng. Cuthbert Malindi and other senior government officials inspected the sinkhole that developed along the Ndola- Sakania railway line in Ndola.
During the inspection , Hon. Tayali commended ZRL Management for the quick response to the situation in averting what potentially could have been a disaster and emphasized the urgent need to implement remedial works .
Meanwhile ZRL Managing Director Cuthbert Malindi assured the Minister that the company is working round the clock to ensure that train operations resume to minimize the economic impact as a result of the closure of the railway line.
Mr. Malindi said the process to undertake geotechnical assessments is underway to confirm the extent of the impact .
On 11th February, 2025, the company recorded a sinkhole on the Ndola -Sakania railway line . The initial findings by the Engineering team revealed that a sinkhole measuring approximately twenty (20) meters in diameter and fifteen (15) metres in depth developed six ( 6) metres away from the railway line. In addition, cracks were also observed 20 metres away from the sinkhole, with some cracks crossing the railway line. This raised concerns about the ground stability and infrastructure integrity leading to the closure of the railway line.
