LOCOMOTIVE COLLIDES WITH TRUCK AND TRAILER AT BWANA MKUBWA LEVEL CROSSING
LUSAKA, Zambia, 24th February, 2025 – Zambia Railways Limited (ZRL) regrets to confirm an accident which occurred today at Bwana Mkubwa level crossing at 11:40hrs ,involving locomotive number 406 and a truck registration number BLB -2832 and trailer registration number AJE -6029 loaded with mealie meal enroute to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
Initial investigations have revealed that the truck driver failed to stop at the level crossing to give way to the locomotive that was making shunt movements leading to the collision . Unfortunately, this resulted in the truck capsizing.
Despite the impact of the collision, the incident did not result in any injuries or fatalities, but caused damage to the truck and the locomotive.
ZRL would like to continue urging all motorists to exercise caution and patience when approaching and traversing railway crossing points , as failure to do so can have devastating consequences .

A shunt movement refers to the process of moving wagons within a railway yard or between different tracks. This process involves organisation, assembly or disassembly of trains and the loading or offloading of cargo. During a shunt movement ,a locomotive or shunting engine is used to push or pull the wagons into the desired positions.
