The Zimbabwean Government through the Grain Marketing Board (GMB) has contracted Zambia Railways Limited (ZRL), National Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ) and TAZARA to collectively move seventeen thousand metric tonnes (17,000) of bagged Maize from Tanzania to Zimbabwe.
The transport contract was signed on 4th September, 2019 and the movement commenced on 19th September, 2019.
As at 10th October, 2019, about nine thousand six hundred and one hundred (9,100 mt) has been loaded and moved.
The three Railway Administrations have committed to executing this movement within three (3) months. As things stand they are headed to beating the deadline.
Zambia Railways Limited, Chief Executive Officer, Christopher Musonda is elated by the successful movement of the trains from Tanzania to Zimbabwe.
“It is gratifying to note that 9,100 tons of maize has been transported by the three railway transporters in about a month. This is an indication that the collaboration among railway operators is yielding positive results as can be seen from this transportation agreement” Mr Musonda noted.
Mr Musonda adds that the transportation of the bagged maize is an indication that the three railway operators have the logistical and operational capacity.
The CEO further states that ZRL will ensure that it performs efficiently on its stretch for the transportation of the targeted tonnage.
