ZRL AMONG SEVERAL ORGANIZATIONS THAT TOOK PART IN THE PROVINCIAL LAUNCH OF 16 DAYS OF ACTIVISM AGAINST GENDER BASED VIOLENCE IN KABWE

Zambia Railways Limited (ZRL) was among several organizations that took part in the 2024 Provincial Launch of 16 days of Activism against Gender Based Violence (GBV) in Kabwe.
The event which took place on 25th November 2024, started with a march past from St. Columbus School to Kwame Nkrumah University Main campus and was held under the theme: “Towards Beijing +30 unite to end violence against women and girls”
ZRL Assistant Manager Safety, Health, Environment and Quality Ms. Glenda N. Sokontwe and Senior Safety Officer Mr. Kelvin Simaata represented the company at the event.
Speaking on the sidelines of the event, Ms. Sokontwe said the 16 days activism against GBV gives organizations and individuals a golden opportunity to highlight the various forms of GBV affecting women and girls and the risks associated with GBV.
“Gender based violence against women and girls in all their diversities and in various spaces including the private, public work and online should be condemned at its highest degree. This awareness should bring out a positive support system to end GBV in all spaces,” she said.
And officiating at the event, Central Province Minister Hon. Mwabashike Nkulukusa bemoaned the continued increase in GBV cases in the province.
Hon. Nkulukusa said the number of GBV cases has increased from 1,515 in the first to the third quarter of 2023 to 1,619 during the same period of 2024.
He said President Hakainde Hichilema has established provincial gender offices in all the 10 provinces to coordinate gender matters and conduct robust awareness campaigns to change the harmful social norms.
“This year’s theme resonates well with governments efforts in improving and supporting the well-being of women and girls in the country,” Hon Nkulukusa said.
Further, Chief Chamuka of the Lenje Speaking people in Chisamba district of Central Province also regretted the increase in GBV cases in his Chiefdom.
The Launch was also attended by the Central Province Permanent Secretary Dr. Milner Mwanakampwe, Kabwe Mayor His Worship Mr. Patrick Chishala, and Kabwe Central Constituency Member of Parliament Ms. Chrizoster Phiri, Kabwe District Commissioner Mr. Lennox Shimwambwa, Chief Chamuka of the Lenje speaking people among other senior government officials.
