Friday,26th July,2024, Kabwe – Zambia Railways Limited (ZRL) commends the Kitwe City Council (KCC) for the proactive efforts in demolishing illegal structures which were mushrooming at Mbukulu Level Crossing in Kitwe’s Mindolo area.

The decisive and swift action taken by the Local Authority demonstrates a commitment to protecting the railway infrastructure. The Local Authority has not only upheld the rule of law but also safeguarded the integrity of the railway network.

The demolition exercise in Kitwe serves as a warning to would be encroachers to desist from developing illegal structures on railway land as they will face similar consequences.

Further, we encourage members of the public to exercise caution when purchasing land in close proximity to the railway reserve land in order to avoid encroachment on railway property.

ZRL is concerned with the increased cases of encroachment on the railway reserve land throughout the system. Encroachments are a violation of the Railways Act which prohibits anyone to build within 50 meters on either side of the Railway line or any land beyond the 50 meters radius that is owned by ZRL.

The railway reserve land plays a crucial role in ensuring the safe and efficient operations of our railway services. Therefore, encroachment on this reserve land not only poses a safety risk to the train operations and the entire community ,but also hinders our ability to maintain and improve the railway infrastructure.

ZRL remains committed to working in collaboration with the local authorities and other stakeholders to ensure the protection of railway land from encroachments.
