ZRL,ZP CONFER ON COLLABORATIVE EFFORTS TO CURB VANDALISM AND THEFT OF RAILWAY PROPERTY

Zambia Railways Limited (ZRL) Managing Director Eng. Cuthbert Malindi , on Tuesday 22nd April, 2025 paid a courtesy call on the Inspector General of Police, Mr. Graphel Musamba , at Police Headquarters in Lusaka.

The high-level engagement focused on strengthening collaborative efforts to combat the persistent challenges of vandalism and theft of railway infrastructure materials across the  railway network .

During the meeting, Eng. Malindi emphasized the importance of securing railway property, which is vital to the country’s economic development and regional trade facilitation.

He noted that the theft and vandalism of rail infrastructure components continue to pose significant operational and safety risks, leading to service disruptions and costly repairs.

“Safety and security is key in our operations, and therefore ZRL has placed prevention of vandalism and thefts as a priority. The railway sector is a strategic national asset that must be protected at all costs. We need to work hand in hand with the Zambia Police Service in safeguarding this infrastructure” Eng. Malindi stated.

In response, the Inspector General of Police reiterated the significant role that the railway company plays in fostering economic development as a strategic national asset.

Mr Musamba assured ZRL of the Police Service’s full support and pledged willingness to collaborate with the railway company through a systematic approach in addressing vandalism and other railway related crimes.

The meeting marked a significant step in fostering  cooperation between Zambia Railways Limited and Zambia Police Service.
